Patiala Violence, To prevent the spread of rumours, the Punjab government on Saturday ordered suspension of mobile internet services and SMS services in Patiala district. Mobile internet services are suspended in Patiala district till 6 pm today

The decision has been taken after clashes broke out between two groups on Friday, in which four people were injured.

According to an order issued by Principal Secretary, Home, Anurag Verma, mobile internet services (2G/3G/4G/CDMA), all SMS services and all dongle services, etc., which allow voice calls in the territorial jurisdiction of Patiala except on mobile networks. The district will remain closed on Saturday from 9.30 am to 6.00 pm.

The order said that the Deputy Commissioner and SSP have pointed out a situation where the data services may be grossly misused by some unscrupulous elements.

In the order, all the telecom service providers in the state have been asked to ensure compliance of the order.

“Recent law and order incidents are likely to cause tension, annoyance, obstruction or injury to persons, threat to human life and property, breach of public peace and tranquility within the limits of Patiala district.”

The government said that the decision has been taken in public interest with an aim to check the spread of misinformation and rumours through various social media platforms.

Meanwhile, various Hindu groups planning to take out a protest rally against Friday’s violence have called it off after officials assured that those behind the violence would be arrested within 48 hours.

Most shops in the city remained closed on Saturday.
