Personal life
Alongside speaking Danish Kjaer is also fluent in five languages, which includes English in addition to Italian (having learned Italian through his period in Palermo). When he was a kid, he was a fan of John Terry and Fabio Cannavaro and was a huge supporter of Liverpool. Although his father was in favor of him becoming a soccer player, however, his mother, who was a teacher, was not.
Even though he didn’t like studying when at school Kjaer was able to earn his degree. He got married to his long-time girlfriend, Camilla. They’ve known each other since they were a teenager. They broke in the middle and, at some point, Kjaer began a relationship with Elina Gellert, who is a Swedish national. They have two children: Milas as well as Viggo. In the summer of 2017, they tied the knot.
Kjaer discussed superstition, saying: “I am a believer but not a practitioner. The first sock I wear is always the right one. But not just before every game. I do it every morning.”

Kjaer was the only player to make a debut in the team of Denmark U18 on September 19th, 2006, when he scored a 4-0 win over Slovakia U18. Kjaer made his debut with the Denmark national team for under-19s on September 6, 2006, at 17 years of age, and defeated Portugal U19 by a score of 3-2. He played in a total of 10 games and scored a goal for the under-19s up to October 2007 and won the title of 2007 Danish under-19 player of the year. The under-19s coach concluded that Kjaer was an impressive defender, even at his age. After his breakthrough with Midtjylland Kjaer was relieved from the under-19s squad in March 2008 in order to not wear his body out.
Kjaer was picked up by the Denmark national under-21 team in May 2008 to be an alternative to Michael Jakobsen, making his debut in a defeat of 0-4 in a friendly match against Germany under-21s. He was not in the under-21 squad during his first game at Palermo and was then recalled in October of 2008, playing the match as an uninvolved substitute for Magnus Troest and Mathias Jorgensen. Kjaer was an unreserved substitute in the friendly game against Greece after which he returned to the under-21s for one game in March 2009. He was performing well enough that the coach for under-21s Keld Bordinggaard urged him to be considered to be recalled to Olsen’s team. He then made two appearances on the U21 team.
Kjaer played his first Denmark U20 appearance, playing France U20 on November 19, 2008.
