Michelle Rodriguez threatens to quit ‘Fast & Furious’ saga for macho tone

Taking advantage of the sale of Fast and Furious 8 on digital platforms, Michelle Rodriguez made a surprising statement that she threatened to leave the saga. She wrote this on her Instagram account: “I hope they decide to show the franchise women some love next time, or maybe I should just say goodbye to a franchise I love.”

Rodriguez has played “Letty” in five of the eight films that make up the Vin Diesel-led saga so far. Interestingly, Letty was left for dead in the fourth episode but was “resurrected” in the next sequel, a move that’s already part of the craze allowed and acclaimed by franchise fans. The strange thing is that the actress is now seeking more female love in front of ‘Fast & Furious 9’…

A month ago, Michelle Rodriguez was already voicing her concern about the macho tone of ‘Fast and the Furious’. In an interview with him, he said it had a “90s macho vibe”, and while this was right at first as it depicted a “violent underworld”, his hope was that the show would improve. Something that hasn’t happened, she says, for reasons like success in China, where “the majority of the population is male.”

“What message do we send to women at the end of the day? Especially in the male-dominated environment I work in, this is very difficult for me.”

“Fast and the Furious 8” (“Le destin des furieux”, 2017) grossed $1,238 million worldwide, making it the 11th highest-grossing film in history. Maybe I’m skeptical, but I bet Rodriguez is pushing for a bigger slice of the pie before signing for the ninth installment. Either that or he had never seen a movie in the series until now. What do you think?
