Goretzka was born in Bochum, North Rhine-Westphalia. He completed his Abitur and graduated from the Alice-Salomon-Berufskolleg (Alice-Salomon-Vocational School) in Bochum. Konrad is his father. Konrad is an engineer in the automotive industry as well as an electrical engineer at Opel.
Goretzka created an online campaign, “We Kick Corona” together alongside him and his Bayern Munich teammate Joshua Kimmich to support medical, charitable, and social institutions during the COVID-19 epidemic.
Goretzka has been an active participant against hate crimes, including visiting his Dachau Holocaust memorial as well as meeting Holocaust survivors Margot Friedlander. Goretzka is an opponent of the far-right political group Alternative for Germany, calling Alternative for Germany a “disgrace for Germany” and declaring that “when a party is supported and led by Holocaust revisionists and Corona deniers, then they are unmasking themselves”.

Playing in a style
The year 2013 saw Goretzka is regarded as one of the top players of German football. Peter Neururer, Goretzka’s head coach at Bochum and Bochum, stated that he’d “never seen an eighteen-year-old footballer which had a potential as Goretzka”, and called him”the “talent of the century”. Goretzka is a skilled ability to score goals. He is known for his excellent ball control abilities and is able to spot the best passes to his teammates. He can score strong shots outside of the penalty zone. Also, he is well-known for his exceptional head-striking ability which has him scoring a lot of goals using his head. At 1.89 meters, Goretzka’s ability to jump high helps him take on aerial battles with tall and strong defenses. His primary position is a central midfielder. However, it is possible to use him in the role of a defensive midfielder and winger on the right, and a playmaker. Goretzka’s style of play has been likened to two of Germany’s greatest footballers, Lothar Matthaus and Michael Ballack.

Youth
On October 15th, 2010 Goretzka played the Germany National U-16 soccer team debut during an friendly match with Northern Ireland. Goretzka scored in the victory of 3-2. On August 24, 2011 He made his Germany U-17 national squad debut in a match against Turkey in a 4-0 win. He also commanded the Germany national football team for U-17s during the 2012 UEFA European Under-17 Championship in Slovenia and guided his German U-17 team to the final, where they faced the Netherlands. In the final match, Goretzka scored the opening goal of the match. his goal was repaid by the clock, bringing the score to 1-1. The penalty shoot-out that followed ended in victory for the Netherlands. On August 8, 2013, he was the first player to debut in the Germany national team of U-21s under the direction of Horst Hrubesch, in a 0-0 draw against France and played a superb game.
Goretzka was approached from his Polish national team but turned down the invitation because he was no longer aware of any Polish origins.
Senior
On May 8 2014, Goretzka was included in the preliminary squad of 30 players that will be the German national team for the 2014 FIFA World Cup by Germany’s manager Joachim Low. On May 13, 2014 the team made its debut in a draw with Poland. Following the match between Germany and Poland and Poland, during which Goretzka was suffering from an injury to his muscles the player was exiled from the team’s pre-season training camp as well as the final team of this year’s World Cup in Brazil.
In May of 2017, Goretzka was named in Germany’s squad for Confederations Cup in Russia. In addition to Schalke teammates Max Meyer and Max Meyer, Goretzka was included in the team of this year’s Summer Olympics. He was captain of Germany in their first game against Mexico However, he sustained shoulder injuries after which he returned to Gelsenkirchen.
