The style of the game

“For the balance of the team, he is without a doubt most important player … He has changed the face of Madrid.”

Manager of Atletico Madrid Diego Simeone before the 2016 UEFA Champions League Final

Casemiro is mostly an attacking midfielder, but Casemiro has also been used in a box-to box role at the center of the field or even as a centre-back in some instances. Although he’s not very skilled or proficient from a technical point of view (although the player did increase his skill in this area under the guidance of manager Zinedine Zidane while in Real Madrid together), Casemiro is a smart physical, agile, strong and tough-tackling midfielder with a high rate of work. Although he is most well-known by his capacity to offer stability to his team by helping his offensively-minded teammates defensively and dispersing the ball in a precise manner after he’s won back possession, he’s an experienced midfielder with a strong shot outside of the penalty area and solid distribution as well as the ability to move forward using his runs from the ball, or initiate attacks by passing. These qualities also allow him to play offensively as well as score goals as well as break up play. Furthermore, his quick responses and his superior positional awareness, ability to comprehend the game and his excellent anticipation, help him excel in the holding midfield position that is in front of the defence in order to block counter-attacks and defending the backline. Sometimes referred to as an “destroyer” in the media and has received praise from the pundits for his spirited and aggressive style of play and his tactical awareness and ability to win balls and ball-winner, which allow him to defend the ground, track back, and push opponents. The intensity of his play on the pitch is evident in his ferocious endurance and challenges, have resulted in Marca to refer to him as “The Tank.” Alongside his athletic abilities He also stands out because of his competitive determination, mental toughness and perseverance on the field. While he has a solid discipline record, he’s been able to been criticized by the media for his frequent and aggressive actions on the field. Casemiro’s style of play has attracted comparisons to the style of the former Real Madrid defensive midfielder Claude Makelele and also his fellow Brazilian Toninho Cerezo.
