Irene Cara, the singer and actress best known for her roles in the 1980 film “Fame” and the 1982 film “Flashdance,” has died at the age of 63.
Her publicist, Judith A. Moose, announced the news early Saturday on social media, writing that a cause of death was “currently unknown.”
Cara won an Academy Award for Best Original Song in 1983 for “Flashdance… What a Feeling,” which also topped the Billboard Hot 100 chart. She also received a Grammy Award for the song in 1984.
Cara’s other notable hits include “Fame” and “Too Hot to Handle.” She also appeared on Broadway in the original production of “The Wiz” in 1975.
