Virgil van Dijk (born 8 July 1991) is a Dutch professional footballer who is a center-back with Premier League club Liverpool and the Netherlands national team. He is considered to be one of the top defensive players in the world, Van Dijk is known for his toughness, leadership, and aerial skills. Van Dijk is the only defensive player who has won the UEFA Man of the Year award and has been runner-up to the Ballon d’Or and Best FIFA Men’s Player.
After beginning his career at Groningen, Van Dijk moved to Celtic in 2013. There, they won the Scottish Premiership and were named in the PFA Scotland Team of the Year for each of his seasons at the club. He also won the Scottish League Cup in the latter. In 2015 Van Dijk was signed by Southampton prior to signing with Liverpool in January of 2018 at PS75 million, which was then the world’s record transfer price for a defensive player. While at Liverpool, Van Dijk reached back-to-back UEFA Champions League finals in 2018 and in 2019 and won the latter. He also won the PFA Players’ Player of the Year and was named The Premier League Player of the Season during his debut full season. Van Dijk is a former youth international of the Netherlands who represented his country at the under-19 and under-21 levels. Van Dijk made his debut as a senior international with the Netherlands in the year 2015. He was promoted to captaincy for Dutch nationals in March of 2018. Van Dijk was born in Breda to a Dutch father and a Surinamese mother.
