What did St. Augustine?
Saint Augustine is also known by the name of Augustine of Hippo was a bishop from Hippo Regius within Northern Africa. He was a pre-Christian Christian theologian and played an important part in the evolution of the early Western philosophy, characterized by the union with Greek philosophical theories and Judeo-Christian faith traditions. He was an intellectual of thought and was captivated by philosophical inquiries and spent the first years of his life researching the various theories of religion and philosophy. While he was considered to be one of the greatest people associated with Western Christianity, he had not changed his religion until he reached the age of 31 old. He was heavily influenced by Manichaeism, Gnosticism, Manichaeism, though later on , his interest changed towards Neo-Platonism. After many years of confusion, he began to study his Holy Scriptures and became convinced that salvation was available by only Jesus Christ. After his decision to convert to Christianity He began to develop his own theories of theology and philosophy that had an enormous impression over the medieval view of the world. In acknowledgement of his contribution to Christian doctrine He was conferred an honorary title: Doctor of the Church. He is recognized as to be a saint by both the Catholic as well as those of the Eastern Orthodox Church, and is the patron saint of brewers theologians and printers. It is because of his influence on Western faith that his works such as Confessions’ and ‘City Of God’ are read widely even to this day.
