The show was developed by, wrote and produced by South Korean filmmaker Hwang Dong-hyuk. Hwang Dong-hyuk was the creator, writer and director. Squid Game is a contest comprised of games for children with a death penalty for those who lose to receive prize money worth W45.6 billion. Other major characters in the show were performed by Lee Jung-jae, Park Hae-soo, Wi Ha-joon O Yeong-su Heo Sung-tae Anupam Tripathi and Kim Joo-ryoung. The show was streamed the internet and was distributed by Netflix across the globe, and was the only Korean drama to be ranked at the top on the top ten Netflix top charts of TV shows watched the most worldwide. In its first week of launch, the show drew more than 111 million viewers across the world it became Netflix’s most watched show in its debut.
  • To play the role of ‘Kang Sae Byeok as she appeared in Squid Game, she practiced the Hamgyong dialect in actual North Korean defectors, watched documentary films about the defectors and took up martial arts. To better understand Sae-byeok she kept an account of her life from the character’s viewpoint and got inspiration from the feeling of loneliness during her time living in New York. When she was in an interview with the media, she mentioned,
    When I was writing the daily journals I was in a position to create Sae-byeok’s perspective within myself, and the facial expressions she displayed. It’s almost like I physically accumulated all her experiences to convey her personality. Naturally, I had to practice combat art for scenes of action, and master what is known as the North Korean dialect. All those efforts along with the support of the many people I had worked with resulted in the birth to the Sae-byeok’s personality.” Following the show’s airing the show, she was a fan-favorite and the critics awarded her the title of the show’s breakthrough star. Ho-yeon also became the most followed South Korean actress on Instagram over the most popular South Korean actresses Lee Sung-kyung and Song Hye Kyo.
