Early life
Jorginho was born at Imbituba, Brazil’s state of Santa Catarina. He moved to Italy when he was 15. Through his paternal great grandfather Giacomo Frello, who is from Lusiana (Veneto), he is Italian and has thus been granted Italian citizenship.
His mother has been credited with his passion for football. Jorginho nearly quit football after learning that his agent was financially exploiting him while playing for Verona’s youth team. But a phone conversation with his mother helped him persevere and keep playing.
Gheorghe Hagi was his childhood idol. His friends nicknamed him Haginho.
Style of play
Jorginho’s composure as a footballer is well-known. He can be used in any position in the midfield. He is often deployed in the middle of a 3-man midfield with a 4-3-2-3 formation because of his football intelligence, work rate, technique, football vision, passing accuracy and ability to break down possession. He is not very tall and imposing due to his average height and slender build. However, his ability to play both box-to-box and defensive midfield roles as a ball winner, thanks to his tactical intelligence, positional awareness, awareness and ability to read the game allows him to cover ground and press opponents further up to retrieve the ball. He is more comfortable in a creative, more reserved role as a deep-lying, playmaker in the back-line. This position, known in Italian football jargon as the regista, allows him to spend more time on the ball and control the pace of his team’s play through his precise, horizontal passing game. He is not fast and lacks speed, but he is known for his ability to move off the ball and to misplace his markers. This allows him to locate gaps where his teammates can pass to him and allow him to link up with them in tight spaces.
Because of his ability to direct play in the midfield and assist his team defensively, his role has been compared to that a metodista (“centre half”) in Italian football jargon. He is also a skilled penalty taker and often does trademark hops when taking spot kicks.
Jorginho cites Andrea Pirlo and Xavi as his inspirations in footballing. [
