There are two main ways to join the Indian Army after the 12th. The two options are as follows :
- National Defense Academy
- The Technical Entrance Scheme ( Technical Entry Scheme)
National Defense Academy
The National Defense Academy is the Joint Defence Service Training Institute of the Indian Armed Forces. The army aspirants to train for the Indian Army, the Indian Navy and the Indian Air Force train together before moving on to their respective Academies to further their education. The process of selecting candidates to be admitted into these prestigious academies consists of :
- Passing of the Written exam that is administered by UPSC
- The Services Selection Board Interview Round
- If they pass in the Interview Round, the candidate must pass an Medical Test.
Based on this three-round process, the merit list is announced and the candidates who are selected are then trained for a period of three years prior to when they are transferred to their respective schools of instruction for one year of training , after which they receive an award. Candidates also have the chance to complete an all-time bachelor’s degree, whether the BA or BSc as well as BCs. Note that just married males aged between the ages of 16 1/2 to 19 1/2, who have completed their 12th year in math, chemistry, and physics with an average of 70 % are eligible to take this test.

- Candidates who are not married and between the between the ages of 19 and 25 are eligible to apply.
- They must also be graduates of an approved school and university.

Non-UPSC Entry
Under the NON-UPSC Entry women are able to join the Indian Army either through the NCC Special Entry or through Judge Advocate General
NCC Special Entry
This is a method for direct entry for women , in which they do not have to take an entrance exam. The criteria for eligibility are as follows:
- Female candidates who are not married and aged 19-25 may apply.
- They must achieve minimum 50% of their degree with an official NCC C’s certificate and a the minimum grade of ‘B.

4. The Technical Admission Scheme (TES) 10+2:
Candidates who have passed the 10+2 CBSE/ICSE/State Board Examination , with a an aggregate of at least 70% points for Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics can apply to be appointed under 10+2(TES). If they pass an exam like the SSB and being certified suitable by the medical panel they are required to complete one year of fundamental military instruction in the Training Academy and thereafter undergo three years of engineering degrees in their respective streams prior to obtaining Permanent Commission. 7. NCC (Special Admission Scheme)
University graduates with an NCC “C” Certificate with a minimum “B’ rating and 50 per cent aggregate marks from the graduation examinations can submit an application in the Short Service Commission through this application. Students in the third year of their studies can apply if they have attained a minimum of 50% aggregate marks during the their first two years. Candidates must achieve an overall aggregate of at least 50 % marks in order to be chosen in an interview, failing which his candidature is withdrawn. Candidates must have a degree in graduation when they join OTA or candidates who are who are studying in the third year must be able to prove the certificate within 12 weeks of the beginning of their the training program at OTA. Cadets who are cadets in this category are not subject to exam for writing conducted by UPSC and are put directly to the SSB interview, followed by medical boards. Candidates who meet the qualifications for qualitative must apply via NCC Group Headquarters at the State level. Law graduates who have at least 55% marks aggregate in LLB and aged between 21 and 27 years of age are eligible to be considered to the Judge Advocate General Branch. The candidates who meet the criteria are invited for an in-person SSB Interview and medical exam and then. 9. Short Service Commission Women
Women who meet the requirements are hired to the Army as Short Service Commission Officers. Commission is offered to women in the Corps of Electronic and Mechanical Engineers, Corps of Engineers, Signals, Army Educational Corps, Military Intelligence Corps, Judge Advocate General’s Branch, Army Supply Corps, Army Ordnance Corps and Army Air Defence. Women can avail Short Service Commission in three streams namely. Technical, Non-Technical and Specialist Post Graduates for the duration of ten years. It is extendable to an additional four years entirely on the basis of voluntary. In the past, Government of India had given the option of permanent commissions for 141 officers of the Army Education Corps and Judge Advocate General Branch following having completed 10-years of military service. 10. Army Cadet College (ACC) Entry
The qualified Additional Ranks (OR) who are in the age group of 20-27 years with minimum two years of service with a 10+2 pass, is eligible to be considered for Regular Commission. After passing the written exam that is conducted through the Military Training Directorate, the applicants are evaluated through SSB along with The Medical Board. Candidates who pass the test are trained at the Army Cadet College Wing, Dehradun for three years, at the conclusion of which they are awarded an award of graduation. 11. Specially Commissed Officers (SCO) Program
