Jersey Movie Review
Life is about second chances – some seize it and make the most of it, while most let it go to choose the safe path. The Gowtham Tinnanuri directorial Jersey revolves around the life of Arjun Talwar, who gives up his ambition despite being called India’s best cricketer.
After 10 years, he takes up the bat again to fulfill the small dreams of his son Karan Talwar. Why did Arjun leave the game? Does he manage to make a comeback? Watch Jersey to find out.
Gowtham Tinnanuri uses the first half as a reference to his glory days to establish his character as an underdog. While Arjun is down and out, the set up in the film creates curiosity which results in him giving up the game.
There are several tracks in the background – from the conflict between Arjun and his wife Vidya (Mrunal Thakur) to Arjun’s mind-boggling issues – that force the audience to build their theories on Arjun’s backstory. The first half is slow, but the intermission block hits the right note. Ditto for the long climax, which deals with the aesthetic as well as the emotional front.
The story progresses in the second half and it is the mystery surrounding Arjun’s past that keeps the interest intact. The conflict between husband and wife is one of the major drawbacks, the cricket scenes being the most different. At a run time of 2 hours and 45 minutes, Jersey could have been shortened to at least 15 minutes as the narrative has enough loose ends, but the story’s heart is in the right place.
The huge influx of Punjabi may turn off a section of the audience, but it is a minor problem that can be overlooked in the larger scheme of things. The film is very high on drama and falling short on the comic front, which may be an issue for some due to its long run.
A few gentle moments work wonderfully through the narrative, so do the sequence alongside Arjun and his friends with an element of redemption.
On the technical front, the cricket choreography is perfect with real cricket shots devoid of any visual impact. In fact, the shooting style of the game as well as the batting and bowling techniques are much better than most cricket based films. Shahid plays like a champion cricketer, paying enough attention to small aspects like his stance, leg work and key points of the game.
The background score is also strong while the music strikes a chord with the story. It is indeed one of the rare Hindi films in today’s time with humongous music. The dialogues are mediocre, while the production values are rich with a good attempt to recreate a bygone era.
Arjuna’s journey is also one of obstacles – he is not easily accepted back into the fold,
But he’s even more effective when he’s struggling to come back. Mrunal Thakur, who plays Arjun’s pragmatically earnest wife Vidya, is a relatable character just like Arjun. Her love, her growing desperation, fear, hope, confusion are all well presented.
Both of these are courtesy of powerful writing and an inside performance by Shahid and Mrunal. Shahid’s preparation to play the cricketer in the film is proof of how he keeps himself when he is on the pitch.
One of the emotional high points of the film is what Pankaj Kapur shares with Shahid and the nuance with which he plays an aging assistant coach. It’s sociable and wonderful to see the comfort with which they switch between a father-son vibe and sharing a friendly-joke.
Kittu, played by Ronit Kamra, is the lens through which the filmmakers, and therefore, the audience, see the story of Arjun as it unfolds. Her chemistry with Shahid is worth watching.
In the technical departments, the gaming parts are well shot and choreographed. Arjun is a star player, cleverly portraying the passage of time between the years when he has vowed to stay off the field and when he returns to the game.
Shahid’s body shape changes, the presence and absence of freckles on his face, and his body language have been well used. Ditto for Mrinal. In terms of writing and directing, the film packs a lot for its 174-minute run-time. The humorous and emotionally stirring moments stem from the core of the characters and what they chose to do.
Each of the primary characters has its own arc. Cinematography by Anil Mehta and music by Sachet-Tradition also adds to the package. The film’s production design deserves a special mention, for effortlessly presenting the time period this film travels through.
On the other hand, the pace of the film is a bit slow overall. Also, sometimes, you just disappear right before you see Arjun struggling enough to overcome those obstacles. During the runtime, Arjun’s character could have been given a few more chances to cheer.
Even though it’s a sports-based drama, you still don’t encounter many of those nail-biting, seated-edge moments, although everything you see attracts you, especially if you didn’t watch the original. Is. While the film relies more on emotional drama, it could have struck a better balance between sports and human drama.
