“[I’ve] kind of had to accept that the pain is there and to still acknowledge it and move past it,” says Brita Sigourney during an interview with PEOPLE.

“The mental aspect of it is the hardest, because I know that I am going to be okay,” says Sigourney 32. “Just because I feel the pain, doesn’t mean that I’m going to hurt myself more. I’ve just kind of had to accept that the pain is there and to still acknowledge it and move past it.”
The freeskier who is competing at the moment at the halfpipe women’s qualifying competition She has suffered “so many injuries” like bone fractures throughout her professional career, resulting in nine surgeries related to skiing-related accidents.
Sigourney is adamant that “the comebacks from each of those injuries was several months long minimum.” It took the time and effort and hours at the gym to be as strong as she was before, “if not stronger” learning how to utilize her muscles and getting back to her routine.
Her most recent accident to her knee was different, however. The knee has been in constant pain for a while that makes her dependent taking painkillers over-the counter for pain relief. “That’s been really hard mentally just because it’s hard to have fun skiing while you are in pain,” she admits.
The athlete who has always been active and first sat to a ski at the age of two she says that ibuprofen does not always help reduce pain and often leaves her wondering whether she’s ready for the additional: “I think every surgery, especially recently, has been, ‘I can’t do this again. I can’t’ … I wouldn’t mentally be able to handle another one of these, but I think if it did come down to it, I would probably try to persevere and overcome it.”
Sigourney recognizes that her struggle with chronic pain is the norm. Many who suffer from it will force themselves to fight. “I wouldn’t be able to do this if I stop skiing every time I felt that pain,” she thinks. “I don’t know what my life would look like, but it wouldn’t be very fun.”
“Making that choice to understand that the pain is … It’s just going to be there and it’s not going to hurt me. It’s okay to feel the pain I think has really helped me continue to ski.”
She’s definitely not holding back from competing for the gold medal in Beijing -The – Sigourney says she’s “excited” to compete on the international stage again.
“I’m really just trying to focus on enjoying it and having fun and skiing my best and appreciating the little things,” she says. “Being grateful for the opportunity and really soaking it all in because this will be my last Games. And I think it’s really important to absorb it all and be in the moment and not put too much pressure on myself. Obviously I want to do well, but if things don’t go perfectly, then that’s life and I’m going in with an open mind and trying to have the best time.”
