President Biden nominated the Indian-American Gautam Rana as Ambassador to the Slovak Republic. A career member of the Senior Foreign Service and with the rank of adviser, Rana currently serves as the Deputy Head of Mission at the US Embassy in Algiers. Prior to that, he served there as Charge d’affaires from August 2020 to February 2022. He also served as Deputy Head of Mission and Charge d’affaires at the US Embassy in Ljubljana, Slovenia.
Among other positions, he has served as director for Afghanistan and Pakistan on the National Security Council staff and Deputy Assistant Secretary for Political Affairs at the US Embassy in New Delhi. He has also served as Special Assistant to the Assistant Secretary of State, Special Assistant to the Assistant Secretary of State for European and Eurasian Affairs, and has worked in Iraq, Pakistan, Afghanistan and the UAE.
Prior to joining the staff of assistant secretary, he was Special Assistant to the Assistant Secretary for European and Eurasian Affairs Daniel Fried. Also, in February-July 2008, the 4th Airborne Division of the 101st Airborne Division in Khost, Afghanistan.
Prior to joining the Foreign Service in 2002, Rana was a staff attorney at the Legal Aid Association in New York City and a civil rights officer with the National Asia Pacific American Law Consortium. Rana has various levels of proficiency in Hindi, Gujarati, Spanish and Arabic. He holds degrees in Economics and International Relations from the University of Pennsylvania, a law degree from Vanderbilt University, and a Masters in Strategic Security Studies from the National Defense University. He is married and has two children.
