Jose Alberto Rodriguez (born May 25, 1977) is a professional Mexican-American wrestler promoted, promoter, and mixed martial artist. Most famously, he is known for his two stints in WWE under the name of the ring Alberto Del Rio and his work in the outside world within WWE under the name of the ring Alberto El Patron.
Prior to joining WWE, Rodriguez used the name Dos Caras Jr. as a mixed martial artist and Luchasador in mainly Mexico and Japan with the success of Consejo Mundial de Lucha Libre (CMLL) by winning the CMLL World Heavyweight Championship once. Rodriguez joined WWE on the 1st of September 2009 and was able to make his debut on the main roster in the year following in the form of Alberto Del Rio. In WWE Rodriguez, he became the first Mexican-born World Champion in WWE history, after winning his first WWE Championship in 2009 and also the World Heavyweight Championship twice each. He also took home his 2011 Royal Rumble and the 2011 Money in the Bank ladder match, which made him the sole professional wrestler in history to win both matches in the same calendar year.
Rodriguez Rodriguez resigned from WWE at the end of 2014 and began wrestling in the role of Alberto El Patron in other promotions, including Lucha Libre AAA Worldwide (AAA), Ring of Honor (ROH), Lucha Underground, Japanese and Puerto Rican promotions, as well as various United States independent promotions. In AAA He won his first AAA Mega Championship once. In 2015, he turned his attention back to WWE at the end of 2015 where he won the United States Championship twice, and then resigning in the year 2016. He later joined Impact Wrestling and won the Impact World Championship title at Slammiversary XV.
Family and the early years of life
The boy was born in San Luis Potosi into one of the most famous Mexican wrestling families His father is a well-known wrestler Dos Caras. His cousins include Mil Mascaras and Sicodelico. The cousins of his, Sicodelico Jr. and Hijo de Sicodelico both wrestlers. Sicodelico’s younger brother Guillermo signed the WWE contract on August 12, 2012, and was assigned the promotions development region NXT under the name of the ring Memo Montenegro. He was released in July 2013.
Rodriguez graduated from the Universidad autonoma of San Luis Potosi where he obtained an architecture degree.
Growing as a child in a family full of wrestlers, Rodriguez chose to pursue Greco-Roman wrestling and was trained by Leonel Kolesni, and Juan Fernandez. He was accepted onto the Mexico national team in Greco-Roman and in his time for the national team, he achieved many achievements. The year 1997 saw him was third in the World Junior Championships, in the Czech Republic. He also took home his division at the Central American and Caribbean Games in his weight class three times and was awarded an Olympic medal in the Pan American Games. Rodriguez was scheduled to participate in the 2000 Summer Olympics in Sydney, Australia, but due to the lack of funds as well as support Mexico didn’t send the team of wrestlers that year.
Professional wrestling professional career

Caras had two chances to compete against Universo 2000 for the CMLL World Heavyweight title, but failed up to his second attempt July 8th, 2007, when he was crowned the CMLL World Heavyweight Champion. Caras’s time as a champion of his time at the CMLL World Heavyweight Championship remained mostly uneventful, with just four titles being defended in the 533 days was his time in the title, after which he lost it before resigning to join WWE.
World Wrestling Entertainment/WWE
Negotiations on contracts (2008-2009)
In the end of 2008 the news broke in the fall of 2008 that Rodriguez had wrestled in a black match with World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE) and that they had given Rodriguez the chance to sign a contract. The following months, contradictory reports about whether he signed or not and he continued to be CMLL World Heavyweight Champion. After losing his title in the hands of Ultimo Guerrero, there was speculation that he did indeed sign with WWE and was reported to have been a surprising contestant at the 2009 Royal Rumble. But, he was with CMLL and claimed that he signed a 4-year agreement and picked CMLL due to the fact that they provided him with an offer that was better than WWE.
Florida Championship Wrestling (2009-2010)

The following week Del Rio beat Matt Hardy via submission in Hardy’s last match with the company. This prompted his friend Christian to invite Del Rio to a match in the Night of Champions. Even though he refused to take on the challenge on September 24, in the episode of SmackDown, Del Rio attacked Christian and injured him the exact way he injured Mysterio the month before. The goal was to take Christian off of the show as Christian had been injured by a torn pectoral muscle. Mysterio returned on the episode of October 8 on SmackDown and dealt Del Rio his first defeat in the main event. The month of October saw Del Rio defeated Chris Masters to represent the SmackDown brand at Bragging Rights. However, in the pay-per view event the wrestler fought his the teammate Rey Mysterio, before being exiled from the contest due to WWE’s CM Punk. In Survivor Series, in the traditional elimination match that is five-on-five, Del Rio captained a team that was competing against Rey Mysterio’s. Even though the team of Del Rio lost to Big Show, he was exiled from the match following Big Show knocked him out by the WMD. In the November 26 episode on SmackDown, Del Rio defeated Big Show via countout to make it to in the forthcoming 2010. King of the Ring tournament. In the following day at Raw Del Rio made United States Champion Daniel Bryan to submit in the first round and was then lost to John Morrison in the semifinal following a distraction with Mysterio who was in his car. On TLC: Tables, Ladders & Chairs, Del Rio took part in the fatal 4-way Tables, Ladders and Chairs match to win the World Heavyweight Championship, which was won by Edge and was also won by Kane along with Rey Mysterio. On the January 7, 2011 episode of SmackDown, Del Rio defeated Mysterio in a two-out-of-three-falls match, with help from Ricardo Rodriguez by holding Mysterio out of the ring to end his long feud with Mysterio.
In the Fourth season NXT which began in December of 2010, Del Rio mentored rookie Conor O’Brian, who became the second contestant eliminated from the show on the 18th of January. The following week, the rookies participated in a fatal four-way match in which the winner was able to change their coach. Brodus Clay prevailed and decided to choose Del Rio as his new professional. After the end of NXT, Del Rio hired Clay as his bodyguard.
On January 30, 2011, Del Rio defeated 39 other wrestlers, with the final elimination being Santino Marella to win at the Royal Rumble and earn the possibility of competing for the World Heavyweight Championship or the WWE Championship at WrestleMania XXVII. On the following night, at Raw, Del Rio made a decision to contest Edge’s World Heavyweight Championship. In the Elimination Chamber, Del Rio took on Edge after he successfully secured his title and secured his place as Del Rio’s opponent for WrestleMania. But, Edge managed to come out victorious following the fact that Christian returned from injury and then attacked Del Rio. In the episode of March 18 on the SmackDown show, Del Rio and Christian finally got their first one-on-1 match in a cage made of steel, which Christian was victorious. In WrestleMania XXVII Del Rio was unsuccessful in his World Heavyweight Title match against Edge. In the episode of April 8 on the SmackDown show, Del Rio defeated Christian to get a second chance with Edge in Extreme Rules. When Edge abruptly quit professional wrestling in the episode on April 11 of Raw, Del Rio was instead scheduled to wrestle Christian in an unofficial ladder match to compete to claim that vacant World Heavyweight Title.
WWE Champion (2011-2012)
In the episode of April 25 in Raw, Del Rio was selected to move from SmackDown and moved to Raw. Ricardo Rodriguez moved to Raw along with him, while Brodus Clay was still on SmackDown. The first day of May at Extreme Rules, Del Rio was defeated by Christian in an elimination match to win an unclaimed World Heavyweight Championship. In the episode of May 23 on Raw, Del Rio slapped Big Show after he had been involved in a fight between him and Ricardo Rodriguez. After a bout, Show was run over by Del Rio’s vehicle driven by Rodriguez who left him by a knee injury that was a storyline. Show returned three weeks later, following Del Rio out of the arena and bringing Rodriguez down. In June 19, on the Capitol Punishment, Del Rio defeated Show through a referee’s stoppage in which he was unable keep the match going due to an assault prior to the match from Mark Henry. On the 27th of June episode in Raw, Del Rio defeated Show in the steel cage, again due to interference from Henry.
On the 17th of July at Money in the Bank, Del Rio defeated Alex Riley, Evan Bourne, Jack Swagger, Kofi Kingston, The Miz R-Truth,, as well as Rey Mysterio in a Money in the bank WWE Championship Contact Ladder Match for a possible WWE Championship match whenever and where ever in the coming year. They also became the first wrestler to win both a Royal Rumble and a Money in the Bank match in the same year. Del Rio made his first television appearance for his title defense the following evening at Raw and defeated Rey Mysterio to retain his title. The 18th of September at Night of Champions, Del Rio lost the WWE Title to John Cena and regained it on October 2 in Hell in a Cell by winning Cena along with Punk in an Hell in a Cell match. On October 23 , at Vengeance, Del Rio successfully took on The WWE Championship against John Cena in an Last Man Standing match, following The Miz as well as R-Truth interferred. The 20th of November at Survivor Series, Del Rio was beaten out of his WWE Championship to Punk. Del Rio received a WWE championship rematch in the show’s November 28 episode Raw however, he lost the match after Punk fell him on an unprotected turnbuckle. World Heavyweight Champion (2012-2013)
Del Rio returned at a WWE house show in San Francisco on February 11 2012, where he wrestled Sheamus to a no-contest. On February 19, in the Elimination Chamber Del Rio made an appearance to show his support for Raw General Manager John Laurinaitis. Del Rio returned on the April 2 episode of Raw in a confrontation with World Heavyweight Champion Sheamus and pledging to become The next Champion. In the episode of April 6 of SmackDown, Del Rio defeated Sheamus in a non-title fight through disqualification, earning an opportunity to compete for taking on the World Heavyweight Title. In the episode of April 20 of SmackDown, Del Rio and Ricardo Rodriguez were officially traded from Raw to SmackDown. The 20th of May during Over the Limit, Del Rio was unable to win the World Heavyweight Title from Sheamus in a fatal match of four which also included Chris Jericho and Randy Orton. In the 25th episode of the SmackDown show, Del Rio defeated Kane and Orton in an all-star match to become the top contender for take home the World Heavyweight Championship. In the following week’s the show, Del Rio suffered an injury that was deemed to be a concussion. This caused WWE suspending him from the date-schedule World Heavyweight Championship match against Sheamus at No Way Out. Del Rio returned on the June 18 episode of Raw and defeated United States champion Santino Marella in an untitle match. The following week on Raw, Del Rio wrestled Dolph Ziggler in the point of no contest in the Contract on a Pole Match to earn a chance at winning the World Heavyweight Championship. The result was that both Del Rio and Ziggler were admitted to the championship match the following day during SmackDown which was a match in which Sheamus kept the title after defeating Ziggler. Del Rio received another shot in winning the World Heavyweight Championship on July 15 at Money in the Bank, which he lost to Sheamus. The following night, at Raw, Del Rio was trying to vent his anger against Zack Ryder, but his post-match aggression was interrupted by his long-time adversary Rey Mysterio making his return and taking on Ziggler. A few days later, in the show, SmackDown, Del Rio and Ziggler were defeated by Mysterio and Sheamus in a disqualification match after Rodriguez interferred, however, Del Rio viciously attacked Sheamus. In the July 27 episode on SmackDown, Del Rio defeated Daniel Bryan, Kane, and Mysterio in a decisive four-way battle to become the first in the race in the race for winning the World Heavyweight Championship. The title match, initially scheduled for SummerSlam and moved to the episode on August 10 on SmackDown following Del Rio threatened to press charges against Sheamus for taking his car during the episode on August 6 of Raw and could have stopped Sheamus from competing at Summerslam. But before the match started, Del Rio attacked Sheamus together with a group of men who posed as police officers. This caused SmackDown Director Booker T taking away his highest ranking contender’s the final result. But, the following day, Sheamus had the title match moved back to SummerSlam on August 19 which was the day that Del Rio again failed in attempt to take down Sheamus when the referee did not observe Del Rio’s foot was on the rope at the bottom. In the episode of August 24 on the SmackDown show, Del Rio defeated Randy Orton by submission to yet again be the most popular candidate for World Heavyweight Championship. In the 7th September SmackDown, Del Rio made a complaint of assault against Sheamus following an incident in which Sheamus was allegedly attacking the wrestler and Rodriguez in the September 3 episode of Raw and this led to Booker T banning the Brogue Kick with the warning that Sheamus was stripped of his World Heavyweight Championship if he made the technique again. But on September 16, on Night of Champions, Booker T ended his examination of the dangers that the action poses and lifted the restriction. In the subsequent match, Sheamus used the Brogue Kick to beat Del Rio and retain the World Heavyweight Title.
After putting his feud with Sheamus over, Del Rio moved on to a feud with Randy Orton, with the two battling in the episode of September 28 on the SmackDown. The rivalry escalated into an individual match on October 28 in Hell in a Cell, which Orton was victorious. In the episode of October 31 of Main Event, Del Rio joined forces together with the Prime Time Players (Darren Young and Titus O’Neil) to face Orton, Rey Mysterio, and Sin Cara in six-man tag team match, which culminated with Orton taking down Del Rio for the win. In the episode on November 6 on the SmackDown show, Del Rio was again defeated by Orton in the Falls Count Anywhere match, after landing the form of an RKO to the steel steps at the ringside. They were on opposite teams in the traditional tag match of five-on-five match on the 18th of November at Survivor Series. The team of Del Rio, which was led by Dolph Ziggler, was defeated Orton’s team led by Mick Foley, despite Del Rio losing to Orton prior to the conclusion. The next night on Raw, Del Rio once again lost to Orton in a two-out-of-three-falls match, ending the feud.
On the 16th of December at TLC: Tables, Ladders & Chairs, Del Rio became a fan-favorite at the beginning of his WWE career when Del Rio was able to save Ricardo Rodriguez and the Spanish announcers from 3MB (Drew McIntyre Heath Slater, and Jinder Mahal). Then, later in the show, Del Rio teamed with The Miz and The Brooklyn Brawler to defeat 3MB in a tag match. The following day at Raw, Del Rio and Miz team up together with Tommy Dreamer to defeat 3MB in another tag team match. The episode aired on December 28 on the SmackDown show, Ricardo Rodriguez was given a title match to World Heavyweight Champion Big Show however, Big Show took Rodriguez out from behind. Del Rio was then awarded the title match to replace Rodriguez However, the match ended as an uncontested match because Sheamus took on Big Show. In the December 31st episode in WWE Raw, Show chose to defend his title against Ricardo Rodriguez. When Rodriguez was close to losing the fight, Del Rio attacked Show from behind, leading to an exclusion and sparking an argument with Del Rio and Show. In the episode of January 11 on SmackDown where Del Rio’s character changed into a hero to the Latino fans, he beat Show in the Last Man Standing match to be the first winner of the World Heavyweight Championship. Del Rio made his first successful defense of the title on January 27 , at the Royal Rumble, defeating Show in a second Last Man Standing match, following the incident in which Rodriguez put duct tape on Show’s leg to the ropes. After repeated assaults from Show at himself and Rodriguez, Del Rio and Show took on Show in a singles bout on February 17 in the Elimination Chamber, in which Del Rio submitted him to the cross-armbreaker in order to keep his title. Del Rio then began a fight with his new top contender, Jack Swagger, over his divergent political views about immigration to America. The fight escalated during the episode airing on March 18 on Raw and ended when Swagger broke Rodriguez’s ankle during the Patriot Lock submission. Del Rio continued feuding with Swagger on the April 1 episode of Raw beating the manager of Swagger Zeb Colter by disqualification following Colter struck Del Rio with Ricardo Rodriguez’s crutch. On April 7 , at WrestleMania 29 Del Rio defeated Swagger via submission to keep his World Heavyweight Championship. On the following night, during Raw, Del Rio defeated Swagger and Zeb Colter in a two-on-one handicap match, after the latter had to force Swagger to surrender to the cross-armbreaker. Following that, Del Rio lost the World Heavyweight Champion to Dolph Ziggler, who took the Money in the Bank briefcase and ended his reign at 90 days. Following the loss of Del Rio’s World Heavyweight Title, Del Rio would fight with Swagger along with Ziggler regarding the title. On the episode of April 29 on Raw, Ricardo Rodriguez defeated Big E Langston and Zeb Colter in a three-way battle to grant Del Rio the right to determine the rules of his three-way fight on Extreme Rules and chose a ladder match. But, Ziggler would suffer a serious concussion during the SuperstarsmackDown taping, which resulted in the removal of the match on Extreme Rules. As a result of Ziggler’s concussion, Del Rio instead would be scheduled to take on Swagger in a top contest “I Quit” match at the pay-per-view show on May 19th. Del Rio won. The following weeks, Del Rio would face Ziggler’s enforcer Big E. Langston in an assortment of matches in which Del Rio won 3-2.
Del Rio finally received his title shot on the 16th of June at Payback and, during the match, there was a double-turn; Del Rio turned heel yet again, relentlessly and brutally smacking Ziggler’s head following his concussion in order to beat Ziggler and take back title World Heavyweight Championship. The following night in Raw, Del Rio defeated Ziggler in an untitle match following an incident caused by AJ. In the July 29 episode on Raw, Del Rio re-entered an argument against Christian following a loss to Ziggler in a non-title bout. In the episode of August 2 of SmackDown following the fact that Christian beat Christian in a triple-threat contest to become the top contender for be the winner of the World Heavyweight Championship, Del Rio confronted him in an interview after the match. In the August 5 episode on Raw, Del Rio lost in a non-title bout with Rob Van Dam, after Ricardo Rodriguez’s interference went off and caused Del Rio viciously attacking Rodriguez after the match. On the episode on August 9 of SmackDown, Del Rio again was defeated by Christian in the non-title match. On August 18 , at SummerSlam, Del Rio successfully held victory for the World Heavyweight Title against Christian. After Rodriguez’s return to the ring, he teamed up together with Rob Van Dam, accompanying the latter to matches, and helping him beat Del Rio in a non-title match to gain an opportunity to defend winning the World Heavyweight Title. In the episode of September 13 on the SmackDown show, Del Rio defeated Rodriguez in one match. On the 15th of September Night of Champions, Van Dam defeated Del Rio by disqualification after Del Rio refused to relinquish the cross armbreakerand retained his World Heavyweight Championship in result. Following the fight, Van Dam attacked Del Rio and took out his famous Van Terminator. On the 6th of October on the night of Battleground, Del Rio defeated Van Dam in a Hardcore fight by submission to keep his title. On the following night, at Raw, Del Rio lost to Ricardo Rodriguez after Vickie Guerrero revealed the name of his Hell in a Cell opponent as John Cena. After the fight, Del Rio brutally attacked Rodriguez. On the 27th of October in Hell in a Cell, Del Rio lost the World Heavyweight Title to Cena who ended his reign of the age of 133 days. Del Rio received his rematch for the title on the 24th of November at Survivor Series however, he was defeated by Cena.
Final feuds and the departure (2013-2014)
The next night, on The November 25, episode on Raw, Del Rio teamed together along with Randy Orton in a losing match against John Cena and Big Show in tag team matches. The 2nd nine episodes of Raw, Del Rio suffered disappointment losses against the return from Sin Cara. Del Rio finally defeated Sin Cara on the 6 January episode of Raw. Following that match Del Rio insulted the soon-to-be-returning Batista and promised to defeat Batista at the Royal Rumble to get everyone talking about his character. In the January 13 episode of Raw the wrestler knocked out Rey Mysterio and after the fight, he once more confronted Batista. In the January 20 episode of Raw after he had defeated Rey Mysterio, Batista returned and assaulted Del Rio with a Batista Bomb. The following day, during the Royal Rumble, Del Rio took part in the Royal Rumble match as number 27 and was able to perform well, however, he lost to Batista who won the match. On the 3rd episode in Raw, Del Rio confronted and eventually fought Batista and led to Batista smashing Del Rio through the broadcast table in the following week. In the previous episode, Del Rio squashed Dolph Ziggler. This resulted in the match with Del Rio and Batista at Elimination Chamber in which Batista took the victory. On the following night, in Raw, Del Rio defeated Batista in a match that was a reprise of last night’s match. In WrestleMania The XXXs, Alberto Del Rio participated in the Andre the Giant memorial battle royal. He was involved in a variety of eliminations, before being knocked out by Sheamus.
In The June 2 show on the Raw show, Del Rio defeated Dolph Ziggler in order to be a part of an 2013 Money in the Bank ladder match that later became an unclaimed WWE World Heavyweight Championship; Del Rio would lose the match to John Cena. In The July 4th episode on SmackDown, Del Rio unsuccessfully fought Sheamus to The United States Championship. He beat Ziggler on the 7th of July Episode on Raw in order to win a third United States Championship opportunity against Sheamus and was unlucky after an unsuccessful Last Man Standing match the following night at the Main Event. In Battleground Del Rio took part at a fight royal to win an unclaimed Intercontinental Championship but was eliminated by Dolph Ziggler. Del Rio lost several matches during the next few weeks. He was dismissed from WWE on the 7th of August because of “unprofessional conduct” following an incident between an employee and a manager who was alleged to have had made a racist comment.
Return to AAA (2014-2015, 2018)
On August 11 in 2014 AAA confirmed that, following his being dismissed at the hands of WWE, Rodriguez would be returning to the organization during Triplemania XXII. In a press conference held on August 14th, Rodriguez acknowledged that WWE owned the Alberto Del Rio name and announced that he will join AAA using the newly-created name of the ring El Patron (“The Boss”). The name was coined by the name “The Boss” in WWE by Ricardo Rodriguez, during ring introductions and Spanish commentary, however the name wasn’t trademarked. Rodriguez said that at the moment , he was bound by the no-compete rule for 90 days which prevented him from competing for AAA. Then, he stated that as part his exile of WWE, Del Rio was prohibited of wrestling within America. United States for one year. On the 17th of August at Triplemania XXII, El Patron as well as the father of his son Dos Caras appeared to open the event, speaking about his visit to AAA and then addressing WWE and claiming that WWE was racist. Their speech was disrupted by Los Perros del Mal stable. When one of the stable members was able to touch Caras, El Patron ran after the stable and cleared the of the venue, while officials informed him that he was bound by the no-compete clause of the WWE. In early September 2014 Rodriguez’s legal team had settled his disputes with WWE and the wrestler was no longer bound by the no-compete rule for 90 days. On September 14th, Rodriguez, now billed as “El Patron Alberto”, made his AAA return to the ring, teaming up along with Myzteziz along with La Parka in an all-tag team main event, in which they beat Aguayo, Averno and El Texano Jr. Alberto then began to fight in a feud with El Texano Jr. over the AAA Mega Championship. On November 28 Ricardo Rodriguez made his AAA debut, becoming Alberto’s personal announcer in the ring. On December 7 , at Guerra of Titanes Alberto beat El Texano Jr. to become the brand new AAA Mega Champion. By winning, Rodriguez became the first wrestler to hold simultaneously the CMLL and AAA world heavyweight championships. On the 24th of May in 2015 Alberto was joined by Myzteziz along with Rey Mysterio Jr. to create”the “Dream Team” for AAA’s Lucha Libre World Cup. The three ended up winning the tournament, beating Johnny Mundo, Matt Hardy and Mr. Anderson in the finals. At Triplemania XXIII, El Patron defeated Brian Cage in a Hair vs. Hair Lucha de Apuestas. In Heroes Inmortales IX El Patron won his Mega Championship against Johnny Mundo.
Following his return, Rodriguez came back to WWE and it was evident that he was not going to come back in AAA in order to fight for the Mega Championship and was therefore taken off the title on the 9th of November. WWE had granted him permission to compete in Guerra de Titanes. However, when the event was cancelled, WWE rescinded the offer.
In 2018it was announced El Patron would make his return at Triplemania XXVI, facing a unknown opponent. On the 21st of August at a press conference AAA did not announce El Patron’s fight in this final deck. El Patron explained he wouldn’t be on the card since he had an argument in a meeting with Dorian Roldan over the money and there wasn’t any opponent for the player. Roldan claimed that Alberto did not have any contact about the event, and they didn’t put him on the final cards.
World Wrestling Council (2014-2015, 2016-2017)
On the 24th of August, 2014 The World Wrestling Council began a storyline with an episode from backstage where the heel’s manager Juan Manuel Ortega talked by phone with someone who named only by the name of “patron” and referenced a reunion that had previously occurred in WrestleMania XXX. The following week, they aired an episode in which Ortega’s manager was able to pick Ricardo Rodriguez from Luis Munoz Marin International Airport and drove him to a golf course in which Ray Gonzalez Sr. (who was feuding with a number of Ortega’s acolytes) was playing golf. The club was then revealed to have the former WWE announcer for the ring had been given the task of El Patron, delivering a signal of disrespect in the form of an “personal message” before fleeing the scene. In the following week, a match between them was confirmed as Septiembre Negro in which Gonzalez Sr. defeated and injured Rodriguez (now known in the title “El Emisario del Patron”) and then immediately called El Patron to a contest on the field at WWC Aniversario. On the 24th of September 2014, the drama with Rodriguez continued, as Rodriguez was seen as calling Ortega for confirmation of the appearance that was El Patron at Aniversario. But, when he was announced that he would not be able to appear and the storyline deviated and ended with Hernandez replacing him at Aniversario.
On the 7th of November, 2015, WWC resumed the angle with El Patron, beginning with an episode where he attacked his son Ray, El Hijo de Ray Gonzalez during the course of training at the Texas Wrestling Academy in retaliation for the injury his father caused to Rodriguez. The next morning, Ray Gonzalez Sr. was able to challenge El Patron to a match. Most of the promo skits were recorded prior to his return to WWE however, he was granted continuity. It was the only appearance outside of the show that was cleared by the organization following the adoption of the new contract. On the 5th of December in the 5th of December, 2015 Gonzalez Sr. defeated El Patron (who, by then, was at the time, was WWE United States Champion) through disqualification at the finale of the WWC season, Lockout.
On the 15th of October in 2016, El Patron returned to World Wrestling Council (WWC) during an event that was part of WWC’s Aniversario event, in which El Patron faced Ray Gonzalez in a “Jaula de la Muerte” match.
On the 1st of November on the 1st of November, 2014 Rodriguez worked under the name of the ring “Alberto”, made his debut in his first appearance in the Japanese Wrestle-1 Promotion, beating Masakatsu Funaki.
Ring of Honor (2014-2015)
On December 11 on the 11th of December, 2014 Ring of Honor (ROH) announced that Rodriguez known by the title “Alberto El Patron”, was been signed to make his debut with the organization on the 3rd of January in 2015. El Patron defeated Christopher Daniels in his debut match. In his participation in the ROH Winter Warriors tour on January 30 and 31, El Patron defeated ACH and Roderick Strong. In March 1st, 2015 at the ROH 13th Anniversary Show, El Patron was unsuccessfully battling Jay Lethal for the ROH World Television Championship.
World Wrestling League (2015)
Rodriguez was a member of his country in World Wrestling League defeating champion Glamour Boy Shane and Ricky Banderas to capture the WWL World Heavyweight Championship in January of 2015. The title was removed the 19th of September, in 2015 following a dispute in a match in the match against Ricky Banderas.
Lucha Underground (2015)
On the 17th of January in 2015, Lucha Underground announced that Rodriguez had signed with the organization. Rodriguez made his debut at the show’s tapings on television held in Los Angeles, California later the same day. When he made his debut, Rodriguez, billed as Alberto El Patron, was confronted with a slap from his AAA adversary El Texano Jr. He made his debut. The result was a fight on the episode of March 25 that he won his AAA Mega Championship against El Texano Jr. in the form of a Bullrope match. On May 6th, Alberto defeated Johnny Mundo in a battle for the top candidate for Lucha Underground Championship. Lucha Underground Championship. On the 13th of May, 2015 Alberto lost to Hernandez following a fight in which Mundo knocked him into the window, and he lost his chance. After that, Alberto and Mundo feuded until Ultima Lucha, where Mundo defeated Alberto due to an interfering by Melina Mundo’s girlfriend.
Return to WWE (2015-2016)
Del Rio made a surprise return to the WWE at Hell in a Cell on October 25, 2015 along with Zeb Colter serving as manager. He defeating John Cena to win the United States Championship. The following night, during WWE Raw, Del Rio revealed that the duo of him along with Zeb Colter had launched their own homeland “MexAmerica” and unofficially renamed the United States Championship the “MexAmerican Championship”. On November 1, Del Rio took part in the tournament to compete for an unclaimed WWE World Heavyweight Championship, beating Stardust at the start of the round, and Kalisto at the end of the quarterfinals before losing to Roman Reigns in the semi-finals at Survivor Series.
In the November 30 show in Raw, Del Rio joined Sheamus his new stable, The League of Nations, and the following week, he broke off his partnership together with Zeb Colter. After winning his championship with Jack Swagger, in a chair match on TLC’s TLC: Tables, Ladders & Chairs pay-per view, Del Rio reignited his feud with John Cena, after the wrestler returned on December 28. In the 11th of January on Raw, Del Rio lost the United States Championship to Kalisto but regained it during The 14th January episode on SmackDown but lost it to Kalisto at the Royal Rumble. After securing three tag team wins over Kalisto and his co-star Sin Cara, Del Rio requested a three-falls match with two wins to win to win the United States Championship at Fastlane in which Del Rio then lost 1-2.
The night of WrestleMania 32 Del Rio was part of a tag team of six together with teammates, fellow League of Nations members Sheamus and Rusev in a match against The New Day, where the team took victory by a pin when Sheamus was pinned by Xavier Woods. Following WrestleMania, The League of Nations started to disintegrate after King Barrett was kicked out of the group during The 4th of April’s episode on Raw which was the time that Del Rio and the rest of the group fought King Barrett. In the episode of April 28 on SmackDown The League of Nations ended up disbanding after Del Rio and Rusev walked out on Sheamus in a tag match with Kalisto, Cesaro and Sami Zayn.
In the show’s May 2 episode on Raw, Del Rio was participating in an Battle Royal to determine the number. one competitor for Kalisto’s United States Championship, but was defeated from the match by Zack Ryder. In the episode of May 26 on SmackDown, Del Rio defeated Zack Ryder to qualify for the 2016 Money in the Bank ladder match. The pay-per-view match, however, Del Rio was unsuccessful because it was won by Dean Ambrose. In this year’s WWE selection process, Del Rio was drafted to SmackDown. On the show on July 26 on SmackDown Live, Del Rio participated in a 16-man battle royal in order to determine who would be the first-place event to compete in to compete in the WWE World Championship, he ended up losing the battle. The last time he appeared on WWE on the 16th of August Episode on SmackDown Live, Del Rio was defeated by John Cena.
On the 18th of August in 2016, Rodriguez was banned for thirty days for the first time due to a violation within WWE’s Wellness Policy. In August, it was revealed that Rodriguez would exercise an opt-out clause in the terms of his WWE contract, which allows his removal if he is unhappy with his work at the organization. It was reported that Rodriguez was not happy with WWE and claimed that he had received empty promises that included a major event push when Rodriguez returned to the company in October of this year. On September 9th, WWE officially announced that they had reached an agreement with the release of Rodriguez from the organization.
Independent circuit (2016-present)
After his departure after his second departure from WWE, Rodriguez would begin accepting appointments on independent circuits, and then return back to the Alberto El Patron ring name. Rodriguez stated that he was not looking to join any organization and was limiting himself to 60 shows each calendar year over the following two years prior to taking a break from professional wrestling. Rodriguez had been scheduled to wrestle again at AAA on October 2 for Heroes Inmortales X however, he was unable to attend the event. The next date, Rodriguez claimed that he was attacked by an “knife-wielding criminal” at a restaurant prior to the event, and was left with numerous injuries to his arm as well as other areas of his body.
El Patron was a regular participant in appearances in his What Culture Pro Wrestling (WCPW) promotion. He ended the Big Damo’s WCPW career in his very first match, before attempting unsuccessfully to win The WCPW’s Internet as well as Tag Team Championships. El Patron was forced to miss an appearance on the “Delete WCPW” PPV on November 30, 2016 due to flight issues , but was on hand for their “Loaded” episode taping the next day, and defeated Johnny Mundo.
El Patron was a regular participant in appearances in the World Association Of Wrestling (WAW) promotion. El Patron defeated Robbie Dynamite via pinfall then El Patron defeated Chris Masters in the same event. El Patron won the WAW Undisputed World Heavyweight Championship.
Impact Wrestling (2017-2018)
El Patron as GFW Global Champion
At the Impact Wrestling tapings on March 2nd on the 2nd of March, 2017. Rodriguez made his debut in Impact Wrestling, under the name of the ring Alberto El Patron. El Patron shook off Bruce Prichard and Lashley in attempt to get himself in the Impact Wrestling World Heavyweight Championship image. El Patron was then interrupted by Ethan Carter III, who claimed that Alberto needed to get his shot to win the championship, however Lashley refused and gave El Patron a World Championship match. The following night, El Patron defeated Lashley in a controversial manner to take home the Impact Wrestling World Heavyweight Championship. Then, El Patron relinquished the title the next night because of the controversy surrounding his victory. He then was matched against EC3 in the World Championship number one contenders match on the 16th March show of Impact Wrestling, that he took home, becoming the top contestant during the process. In the episode of May 4 of Impact Wrestling, El Patron defeated Eli Drake and became the top candidate for in the GFW Global Championship. In the episode of May 11 of Impact Wrestling, El Patron beat Magnus to take home the GFW Global Championship. In the episode of June 1 of Impact Wrestling, El Patron defeated Ethan Carter III in a Six Sides of Steel Cage match, and he was able to keep his spot as the number one contender. On Slammiversary El Patron defeated Lashley to bring together two championships: the GFW Global Championship and the Impact Wrestling Championship. On the 6th of July at Impact were referring to him by the names of “Unified Champion” and “Unified World Champion”. In the main event Patron was defeated by Lashley. Patron fell to Lashley with the disqualification resulting from an interference by LAX in which he claimed that he was a new member of the faction.
On the episode on July 13 of Impact the characters of El Patron refused to be a part of LAX and beat them in a tag-team battle against Lashley. On the episode of July 20 of Impact following the incident in which LAX captures the El Patron family in hostage, El Patron put on their T-shirt and immediately attacked them. This resulted in the staging of a handicap contest against El Patron and LAX on the episode on July 27 of Impact that he won. Following the game El Patron was attacked by other members of LAX however he was saved from attack by Dos Caras and El Hijo de Dos Caras. The next month, The Patron Family was defeated by LAX due to an interfering of LAX the newest member, Low Ki. El Patron was scheduled to defend his Unified GFW World Heavyweight Championship against Low Ki at Destination X. On July 12 in 2017, El Patron was suspended by GFW because of an incident of domestic violence with his girlfriend in real life Paige. In the wake of this suspension the 14th of August El Patron was disqualified from GFW’s Unified GFW World Heavyweight Championship.
On the 5th of November in 2017, on the 5th of November, 2017 at Bound to Glory in New York, El Patron returned from suspension, declaring all people are “a loser and a backstabber” and getting into a confrontation with Jeremy Borash, turning heel during the process. The following night El Patron disrupted the main event by slapping Johnny Impact and Eli Drake.
El Patron was removed of Impact 7 April 2018, after having no reason to attend his appearance at the Lucha Underground vs Impact Wrestling event in New Orleans the previous night.
Nacion Lucha Libre (2019-present)
In the year 2019, Rodriguez and fellow professional wrestler Chavo Guerrero Jr. have created their own promotional company, Nacion Lucha Libre. The promotion premiered his debut show on a channel on television.
Mixed martial art career
Following his pro debut back in the year 2000, Dos Caras Jr. made the decision to give it a go in mixed martial art (MMA). Dos Caras, in particular, faced Mirko Cro Cop during the Pride Fighting Championships promotion, losing in the first round via head kick knockout.
On the 11th of October, 2016 he was appointed the president of MMA promotion Combate Americas. It was an office that served as a figurative position, in which Rodriguez had no real power within the company, and was mostly responsible for marketing its brand’s image for Mexican media. Rodriguez was removed from the presidency on July 20 2017 to focus in his wrestling professional career.
On the 9th of July on the 9th of July, 2019 the announcement was made that Rodriguez will be returning to mixed martial arts in the very first time since 2010.. He will fight UFC Hall of Famer , and ex UFC Light Heavyweight Champion Tito Ortiz. The bout, held at a weight of 200 pounds, took place at Hidalgo, Texas on December 7th the 7th of December, 2019. Rodriguez lost the fight via one-round submission.
Rodriguez has been previously divorced with Angela Velkei, with whom Rodriguez had three sons. Velkei sought divorce with Rodriguez in June of 2016 and claimed that the marriage had ended the previous month because of sexual adultery. Rodriguez however, stated that the marriage had ended in June 2015.
In May of 2016, Rodriguez and fellow professional wrestler Saraya-Jade Begvis, also known as Paige made it public about their relationship. They were engaged by October of that year. They broke up in the latter half of 2017.
Rodriguez owned the restaurant located in San Antonio, Texas named La Cantinita that began operations in 2016. The restaurant was shut down in November of 2017.
On May 24 in the year 2018, Rodriguez was a naturalized American citizen in the United States.
