He started his career working as a petroleum engineer at Amoco Production Company. Later, while attending law school in 1979, he was an independent petroleum engineer consulting an engineering firm for various companies in Michigan.
In 1982 he founded Terra Energy Ltd., an oil and gas exploration and production company. The company implemented and designed many technical advances that made Antrim Shale gas a commercially viable source in the state of Michigan. In 1995 Terra Energy was sold to CMS Energy and at the time Terra was the largest gas drilling operator in Michigan.
