The style of the game
A left-footed athlete, Mahrez typically plays as a right-winger in a position that lets him get inside and hit the goals with his strong foot, or deliver shots into the penalty box; but he’s also an extremely versatile player who can play anywhere in the front line in a central position as an attacking midfielder or an winger either on the flank, or in a central-forward position as an untrue 9. An agile, innovative and technically proficient player, his primary characteristics include his wit in balance, balance, speed, flair and dribbling abilities. While he’s capable of scoring goals, he’s also a fantastic assist provider thanks to the way he creates opportunities that his players can benefit from. Despite this however, his performances from the penalty area has been uneven over the course of his time. When he was a kid Mahrez was well-known for his ball skills however, he was frequently overlooked because of his thin build. When Quimper’s youth coach Ronan Salaun and his assistant Mickael Pell first saw Mahrez, they remarked that he was skilled as a set-piece player, and had excellent technique and dribbling abilities using both feet, however they noted that he was extremely thin and had a lack of strategic aspect of football and played mostly on instinct and having a background of soccer on the streets following his signing as a player, Salaun advised Mahrez to use his wits to avoid tackling, as the player believed Mahrez was not robust enough to stand up to physical assaults. The Leicester’s former head for recruitment, Steve Walsh noted upon watching Mahrez perform that “Riyad was a bit raw but he had a great touch. He could kill the ball dead and go past people. I liked his positivity. Some of his decision-making wasn’t that great and defensively he wasn’t the best, but you could see that he had real talent.” Mahrez has acknowledged with his previous Leicester coach Claudio Ranieri for helping him to master the tactical aspects to his play. While at Manchester City under manager Pep Guardiola, Mahrez was also able to enhance his defensive capabilities and work-rate as well being able to make better decisions. Mahrez has created his own signature skill known as “La speciale”, in which he fakes shots using his left foot, then he moves the ball over his right foot, allowing it to pass through his opponent.
