One of the greatest space scientists of the 20th century was the Indian Udupi Ramachandra Rao. The first Indian to go into space, he was the Chairman of the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO). He is now considered an icon by the space community. He was also an inspirational leader. While in his last years, he remained a key member of the ISRO board, leading to a new mission on the International Space Station.
In the 1970s, he was named an Associate Professor at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and the University of Texas at Dallas. He returned to India in 1966 and continued his research in space, using balloons, satellites, and rockets. From 1968 to 1970, he was named an Associate Professor at Harvard University’s Physical Research Laboratory. He later joined the faculty of the Institute of Physics in Princeton.

Born in a village near Bangalore, Udupi Ramachandra Rao is best known for developing the Bhaskara satellite. In 1975, he was a student of Vikram Sarabhai and earned his B.Sc. in physics. From 1968 to 1970, he was promoted to associate professor at the University of California, Berkeley. In 1971, he was named an Associate Professor of the Physical Research Laboratory. He then went on to become a professor at the School of Engineering, MIT, and MIT.
Rao was the only Indian to win the Nobel Prize in physics. He received the award after being elected to the National Academy of Sciences and a Fellow of several academies.
